In my opinion, the mankind today knows about space and stars approximately the same as Cro-Magnon men - that is actually only that they exist and they are visible at night!
Certainly, it's interesting that there are ways to prove existence of planets in other star systems - but on the other hand what were reasons for doubting in their existence??? Or we still believe that the Universe rotates around of the Earth?
